Are Josh Rosebrook shampoos and conditioners safe for colour treated hair?
Yes, all Josh Rosebrook products are safe and effective for colour treated hair.
Some shampoos will make colour fade much faster and are just more harsh on your hair, scalp and your body as a whole, but no shampoo is going to really protect your colour or prevent fading.
The only type of shampoo that can lightly replenish your colour and make it appear as though it wasn't fading is a tinted shampoo that uses temporary colour within the product. Temporary colour washes are formulated in a way that colour molecules sit on top of the hair shaft -
Shampoos that are marketed for “colour-treated" hair are just that, marketing. It gives manufacturers an opportunity to change very little in their formulas and market the product in a way that makes people feel as though they are protecting their colour, although it does very little. Most shampoos on the market are filled with chemical surfactants like sulfates, and its many variations, which excessively foam and remove the hair’s natural oils. If manufacturers weren’t filling bottles with mostly cheap industrial grade surfactants and used truly natural foaming agents, time could be spent educating people on the real ways to extend colour naturally instead of misleading the public with clever marketing telling them their shampoo is colour safe and can protect their colour.
Why does colour fade?
Colour molecules break up and fall out as the result of a rising cuticle. Lifting of the cuticle and swelling of the hair shaft is how colour fades. Now, lets look at what makes colour fade:
1) Water. Even rinsing your hair with water will swell the cuticle and allow colour to seep out. Therefore, washing your hair with any type of shampoo will fade your colour and depending on the ingredients some shampoos will cause quicker fading.
2) Surfactants. These are synthetic foaming agents. Sulfates and many other chemicals similar to it get marketed as gentle but are only slightly less harsh. Surfactants strip hair of healthy, natural oils which not only leaves hair vulnerable, these oils are needed to help smooth down the cuticle making it less able to raise and release the colour.
3) Heated instruments. With regular heated styling the cuticle rises. Over time the cuticle will no longer lay down as flat as it once did and is prone to chipping. This is damaged hair. Damaged hair/raised cuticle will not hold colour as well or for as long.
4) Weather. Sun heats the hair, rising the cuticle, oxidizing and lightening colour tone within the cortex.
Avoid or minimize all that is listed above if you want to extend your colour. What else can you do?
Use natural, gentle, organic shampoos. Harsh chemicals and synthetic foaming agents in many conventional shampoos will accelerate color fading by removing necessary natural oils. Your best bet is to search for clean, completely natural and organic shampoos, familiarize yourself with common synthetic chemicals found in many synthetic hair care products, do your research and then avoid them.
My styling cream can also act as a protectant before heat styling, smoothing down the cuticle with organic shea butter, grape seed, sesame and almond oil. I also recommend pure oils which are great for protecting hair, locking in moisture and smoothing. Look for 100% pure coconut, camelina, argan and many, many other nut and seed oils.
